There’s no such thing as a “Happy” Memorial Day
Today is not about bar-b-ques, furniture sales or a “long weekend” to kick off summer. Today is when we, as citizens of this great country, honor the brave U.S. military men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms of our nation. Wishing someone a Happy Memorial Day is a tough pill to swallow for the family and friends whose beloved service members never came home.
Defending this country and protecting our freedoms has always been a courageous and honorable path that not everyone can take. When enlisting in the armed forces, men and women take an oath that says, “I solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same.”
Over the past two years we have witnessed the largest and most blatant encroachment on our constitutional freedoms as American citizens. The soldiers who lost their lives fighting for those freedoms would be sadly disappointed to see how easily this country relinquished them. The unwillingness to question or critical think through the tyrannical, unlawful, and unscientific mandates and measures that have stripped away our rights, is an insult to the honorable soldiers who went to war so we could do just that.
We are supposed to be the land of the free and home of the brave. We routinely sing these words with our right hand over our hearts before every sporting event and parade in this country. But we cannot forget what those words mean. In order to truly be the “Land of the Free,” we must be able to make our own educated choices as citizens and defend those decisions without retribution. We must be able to freely express concern and have discussions with our elected officials about policies that we don’t agree with. The Constitution was created so that America could be the first undoubtedly free country in the world and millions have died since its inception to defend it.
So on this Memorial Day, take time to recognize the sacrifice made by so many, so that we may be free. Do not take those freedoms lightly and let their actions go in vain. Be the free and capable citizens they fought and died for and honor their memory.
Continue to use your constitutional right to free speech guaranteed by the blood of the fallen to let your elected officials know that they serve at the will of the people.
And remember, we are still the Land of the Free, Because of the Brave!
