A Special Mother's Day Message from Unity Project CEO Laura Sextro

Every Mother’s Day, I set out to write about the experience of “being a mother“. And every Mother’s Day I fail to complete this task. This is my 18th year of motherhood, and after 18 attempts, it occurs to me that there is no way to truly describe what it means to be a mother.

Motherhood is the most profound human experience. Being a mother impacts all of human civilization. Mothers can influence culture, societal change, and even the trajectory of an entire civilization. But at the smallest most individual level, being a mother is truly the most important human purpose that a woman can experience. Someone once told me that a person will never truly understand fear or love until they have a child. They were right! There is no way to articulate the paralyzing fear a parent feels when you believe your child is in danger and equally there is no way to articulate the profound depths of love you feel for your children.

So on this Mother’s Day, I will simply say to all the mothers in the world, keep mothering! The world needs profoundly great, fierce, selfless, heroic and strong mothers, more than ever in human history! Keep being the shield for your children. Keep fighting for their innocence. Keep standing in the face of evil with unwavering, and relentless strength! No evil can withstand the strength of a mother’s love for her children!
